		Artist Link http://www.interport.net/~baum I paint hyper-realist figures on empty spaces which are made from reflective materials like silver or gold leaf. Because of the reflections, these spaces remain undefined; they come forward and recede simultaneously, detaching the figures from their supports, transporting them to a seemingly liminal space. In The Poetics of Space, Gaston Bachelard states:"At times we think we know ourselves in time, when all we know is a sequence of fixations in the spaces of the being's stability - a being that does not want to melt away... In its countless alveoli space contains compressed time. That is what space is for." My intention is to create the illusion of apparently disembodied of the figures. This metaphoric quality subverts the narrative dimension of the paintings, giving them an uncanny presence. In contrast to photo-realist painting, the figures do not mirror the observed world, but seem to exist on a meta-physical plane. They stand on a thresholds, walking from known to unknown spaces, and contemplating new realities.
